Sky Blue Aster, know as Aster oolentangiensis,
Aster azureus, or Symphyotrichum oolentangiensis has numerous spreading flower branches with 1
inch flowers on long stalks that bloom late summer to fall. The flowers deep blue to lavender petals surrounding a yellow disk
are
especially appealing to both gardeners and butterflies. It occurs
naturally in dry to mesic prairies and savannas through most of the tallgrass prairie region.
It normally grows 2 to 3 feet tall but can be up to 5 feet tall in rich
soil. Plant in average, dry to moist, well-drained soil in full
sun.
This aster is found in dry or moist prairies, meadows, open woods, and rocky slopes from New York and Ontario to Saskatchewan and Minnesota south to Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas. Most asters germinate without a cold treatment. Asteraceae (Aster Family)
