Aster sericeus Silky Aster (Symphyotrichum sericeum, Western Silver Aster) leaves are covered with fine silky hairs giving the plant a slippery texture and distinctive silvery green color that contrasts beautifully with its attractive flowers. The numerous 1/14 flower heads with violet-purple petals surrounding a yellow center grow in open branching clusters and bloom late summer to fall. Plant in the rock garden with glade coneflower, Prairie Onion, Sand Coreopsis, Narrow-leaf Gayfeather, and prairie dropseed grass. Most asters will germinate without a cold treatment. Symphyotrichum sericeum, Western Silver Aster
Aster sericeus Silky Aster with it's combination of attractive foliage and beautiful flowers is one of my favorite wildflowers for a sunny flower garden.
Found naturally in dry or sandy prairies or glades often in limestone or calcium rich soils from Indiana westward, north to Michigan, Manitoba and North Dakota, and south to Alabama and Texas. Asteraceae (Aster Family)
The map below shows areas
where Aster sericeus Silky Aster plants grow wild but it can be planted and will grow over a much
wider area including the eastern US. USDA plant hardiness zones 2 to 9.
