Castilleja coccinea,
Scarlet Indian Paintbrush
is an extremely popular, well known wildflower and an important source of nectar for hummingbirds. The inconspicuous flowers
bloom within a dense cluster of beautiful leafy bracts that are
brilliant shades of orange, red, or sometimes yellow. Wild Indian Paintbrush
flowers grow in a variety of conditions including moist and well-drained, dry, or sandy prairies that are moist in the spring.
The plant prefers full sun or light shade. Indian Paintbrush seeds are
very tiny, when planted in spring/summer usually germinate in the fall and bloom the next spring.
Indian Paintbrush plants are partially parasitic, they receive part of their nourishment from the roots of other native wildflowers and native grasses.
Castilleja coccinea scarlet Indian Paintbrush is a popular native wildflower occurring naturally in prairies, glades, open moist woodlands, and along streams from New Hampshire to Manitoba, south to Florida Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Scrophulariaceae (Figwort Family)
