Clematis virginiana, also known as Virgin's bower & devil's darning needles, is an attractive showy semi-woody climbing vine suitable for landscape planting and is best when grown on a trellis or fence.   Clematis virginiana has clusters of creamy white flowers turning into showy clusters of silky seeds that glisten with backlighting.  It was first introduced into cultivation in 1720.  Virgins Bower flowers are showy and fragrant.  Virgin's bower flowers grow on new stem growth.  Seed germinate without pretreatment.

Clematis virginiana grows wild in moist or low grounds of open woods and bordering streams, ponds and fence rows from Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, north to Nova Scotia and Quebec, west to Manitoba and Kansas.  The map below shows areas where this vine grows wild but it can be planted and will grow over a wider area than shown.  USDA plant hardiness zones 2 to 10.  Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae)
