Eupatorium maculatum, Spotted Joe pye weed, is a tall, stately plant growing 3 to 5  feet tall (pinch back for compact plant) with fragrant, pale pink to pale purple flowers in large  domed clusters, the attractive seed heads add interest to a flowerbed in winter.  Wild Joe Pye plants can be pinched back in early summer making a shorter, bushier plant.  Joe-pye has large leaves in whorls around the stem and blooms between July and October attracting swallowtail butterflies.  Plant Spotted Joe-pye Weed wildflowers in moist, well drained, rich garden soil in full sun or light shade with wild bergamot, goldenrod, purple coneflower, asters and prairie grasses or use as a large accent plant.   Joe Pye seeds can be planted late fall through early spring.

Wild Spotted Joepye weed occurs naturally in prairies, low moist ground, moist wooded slopes, savannas and along streams.  Asteraceae (Aster Family)
