 angustifolius = Narrow leaf

 Helianthus angustifolius Swamp Sunflower or Narrowleaf Sunflower is a member of the family Asteraceae. Flowers small but organized into larger showy 2 inch flower heads resembling a single radially symmetrical flower cupped by a ring of green bracts. Flower-like heads: tiny radially symmetrical central flowers form the disk; larger flowers around the edge; the rays strap-shaped and resembling petals (however all flowers in one head may be disk flowers or rays.)

Swamp Sunflower is effective when massed together in the landscape.  Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart.  Swamp sunflower prefers full sun to partial shade.  It prefers moist soil but will tolerate average garden soil.   Pinch plants back in early summer to promote branching.  Numerous small plantlets develop around the base, these can be divided to yearly to produce additional plants. 

Helianthus angustifolius, Swamp Sunflower grows wild through most of the South, Midwest & Eastern Us.  Swamp Sunflower can be planted and will grow over most of the US.
