Liatris scariosa
, Eastern Blazing Star has violet-lavender to rosy purple flowers on tall spikes, which bloom from the top downward making it excellent for cut flower arrangements. This hardy and easy to cultivate flower grows well in lean to moderately fertile soil with good drainage and full sun.  Common names for native Liatris scariosa wildflower include Eastern Blazingstar, Devil's bite, Nieuwland's blazing star, New England blazingstar, and Virginia Blazing Star.  Native Eastern Blazingstar is an excellent wildflower planted in a formal perennial garden or in larger groupings in a prairie meadow planting.  It is well accented when planted with other Liatris, Callirhoe (Poppy Mallow), Echinacea (Coneflowers), Zizia (Golden Alexander), Solidago (Golden Rod), and prairie grasses.  Like other Liatris, Eastern Blazingstar makes an excellent cut flower and attracts butterflies, hummingbirds & songbirds.

Native Liatris scariosa, Eastern Blazing Star seed germination is improved after a pretreatment of 3 to 4 weeks of cold moist stratification or when planted outside in the fall or early winter.

The tall spiky flowers of Liatris scariosa, Eastern Blazing Star occur naturally in prairies, glades, and savannas from Ontario to Wisconsin and North Dakota, south to Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.  Asteraceae (Aster Family)
