Liatris spicata has many common names including Spiked Gayfeather, Dense Blazing star, and Marsh Blazingstar.  Liatris spicata spiked Gayfeather is similar to Liatris pycnostachya although under the same growing conditions it will often shorter.  Spiked gayfeather is excellent for cut flowers and is a favorite food source for butterflies and hummingbirds.  Liatris spicata is native to and grows wild in moist prairies and sedge meadows, moist fields, roadsides, and fencerows over most of the Eastern half of the US.  Liatris spicata Spiked Gayfeather blooms in July/August and thrives in ordinary garden soil with full sun.  This very attractive native wildflower will usually grow 24 to 36 inches tall but may grow up to 48 inches high with good conditions.  The vertical nature of the beautiful spikes of purple flowers on Liatris spicata are beautiful in both the formal flower garden and prairie meadow.  The upright form of Liatris species take up minimal space and are suitable for even the smallest garden. They are equally at home in large, established perennial borders, where their thin, tall, airy floral wands create a mesmerizing "pop-up" effect.  Drought tolerance is an especially desirable trait that Liatris species offer. Their water-retentive corms allow them to persist in lean, dry times.
