Marshallia caespitosa, Barbara's Buttons or Puffballs are a clump-forming native perennial occurring in limestone glades and dry prairies. The 1 inch dense flower heads are white to pink-tinged, pincushion-like and dome-shaped atop long, rigid, slender stems rising to 16 inches tall. Barbara's Button wildflowers somewhat resemble some of the cornflowers (Centaurea). Barbara's Buttons wild flowers bloom in spring. Narrow linear-lanceolate leaves (to 4" long) mostly appear in basal rosettes, with sparse stem leaves being much smaller.
Native marshallia caespitosa wildflower plants occur naturally in limestone glades and dry prairies from Kansas and Missouri, South through Texas and Louisiana. (Asteraceae Family)
Marshallia caespitosa Barbara's Buttons wildflowers are easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and prefers moist soils in part shade.
