Salvia azurea, Blue or Azure Sage with its tubular, sky blue, 1 inch flowers on dense terminal spikes along the upper stems are striking plants for the summer and fall garden in well drained open sunny areas.  As a wildflower it grows 4 to 6 feet tall but may be pinched back to keep it shorter.  Azure Blue Sage is quite stunning when planted with Silene (Royal Catchfly), Callirhoe (Poppy Mallow) and Ratibida (Prairie coneflower) Rudbeckia subtomentosa (Sweet Black-eyed Susan) in a perennial garden or prairie meadow.  Seeds should be scarified before planting.

Salvia azurea seed germination will be improved by scarifying before planting.  Rub seeds between 2 sheets of coarse sandpaper.

Native Azure Blue Sage is a striking plant occurring naturally on limestone glades, rocky prairies, and prairie openings from Nebraska to Minnesota, south to Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, and escaped from cultivation east to New England.   Lamiaceae (Mint Family)

The map below shows areas where native Salvia azurea wildflower plants grows wild, it is hardy over a much wider area if planted.  Plant in USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 9.
