Silphium laciniatum,
Compass plant's towering eight foot stalks bear big 4 to
5 inch flowers that resemble
sunflowers. The decorative and deeply lobed two foot tall basal leaves are
an attractive addition to a native wildflower garden. Native Compass Plant's leaf surface faces the morning and afternoon sun, positioning the leaf in a
north south direction (thus its name). The taproot of this plant may
grow six feet deep making the plant resistant to drought. Compass Plant
flowers are utilized by butterflies and it's large seeds consumed by song
birds. Plant Compass

rich, well drained soil and full sun.

Silphium laciniatum seed germination is improved after a pretreatment of 3 to 4 weeks of cold moist stratification or when planted outside in the fall or early winter.
