Talinum calycinum, Fame Flower or Rock Pink is a showy native perennial wildflower suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, and native plant gardens.  Fame flower is a small succulent, the leaves are numerous, fleshy, round in diameter, 2 to 3 inches long and arising from the base. Several Showy 1 inch pink to purple flowers are on thin 12 inch high stems.  In the wild Fame flower grows throughout the Ozarks on thin, acid soils of sandstone, chert, and igneous glades.  Talinum calycinum or Fame Flower has several common names including Rock Pink and Flower-of-an-hour.

An American native widely distributed through the mid-west, it self sows freely, but doesn't displace other ground covers, rather grows in between. Flowers every afternoon once it starts from May to September.  The most vigorous, largest flowered and showiest of the branching, Eastern fame flowers. The rose pink chalices only open for a few hours in the afternoon, but flowering can last from late spring to the first frost.  xeriscapes   a profusion of large 1 inch magenta flowers appear to float above the ground on wiry wispy stems.

The map below shows areas in green where Talinum calycinum Fame flower plants grow wild but it can be planted and will grow over a much wider area than shown.  Family Portulacaceae
